Getting started with Data Contracts using Open Source Tools

This is a hands-on lab with limited capacity, using open standards and open source software.

First, we introduce the Open Data Contract Standard, the open source Data Contract Editor, and the popular open source tool Data Contract CLI to lay a foundation of the YAML format and the tools we will use throughout the session.

Next, we introduce our case study that is used for the hands-on part.

Using our case study, participants take data under contract. They create a data contract for existing data, starting with an imported draft and then adding more and more iteratively, including quality checks and SLAs. They will validate the data against their contract throughout the creation and iteration of the data contract.

After a break, we talk about the data contract lifecycle and versioning. The participants play through updating the contract regarding minor changes, but also introducing a new major version, while phasing out the previous major version.

We finish the session by talking about the potential of data contracts, including automation and AI. And see how to chat with your data becomes really great when having a data contract in place.

Prerequisites

A laptop with a browser is sufficient as everything can be done in the browser in our case.
